The China-Ethiopia “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program” Officially Launches at YRCTI

On the morning of June 8, the launching ceremony for the China-Ethiopia “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program” was held at YRCTI, Kaifeng, Henan. Based on the important instructions of President Xi Jinping oneducationalopening-upand the Action Plan on Improving Vocational Education Quality (2020-2023) issued by the Ministry of Education and eight other departments of China, this program, by providing skill and language training to Ethiopian vocational university students, aims to cultivate much-needed “Chinese+” composite technical and skilled talents for Ethiopian and China-invested enterprises, promote educational cooperation between Henan’s higher vocational universities and the “Belt and Road” countries, and establish a Henan model for the international development of China’s higher vocational education.

Mr.Tefera Derbew Yimam, Ambassador of Ethiopia in China, Wang Huaxing, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Education Department Henan Province, Guo Hua, Deputy Director of the Asia and Africa Affairs Office of the Henan Foreign Affairs, Zhou Baoping, YRCTI’s Party Secretary, Hu Hao, YRCTI’s President, Mei Letang, President of Henan Polytechnic, Liu Yuan, President of Henan Vocational College of Agriculture, Wu Yong, Managing Director of Henan Link Africa Business Information Consulting Co., Ltd., and over 100 representatives from provincial vocational universities and enterprises attended the ceremony.

At the launching ceremony, Zhou Baoping, YRCTI’s Party Secretary, delivered a welcome speech, noting that since its establishment, YRCTI has been dedicated to the development of water conservancy and remained true to its original mission. She stated that entering the new era, YRCTI has continuously deepened international exchanges and cooperation, formed an educational philosophy that emphasizes “joint construction of specialties, joint cultivation of talents, joint management of processes, shared outcomes and responsibilities”, and innovated a collaborative cultivation mechanism involving industry, education, research, transformation, and innovation, thereby enhancing its international education level. She also expressed that YRCTI has established friendly cooperative relationships with 55 universities and educational institutions in 28 countries and regions and admitted over 800 international students from 42 countries and regions. Moving forward, based on the principles of “extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits”, YRCTI will continue to work together with the Ministry of Labor and Skills of Ethiopia and relevant universities to advance the implementation of the “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program”, further deepen China-Ethiopia vocational education cooperation and make new and greater contributions to the cultivation of more international technical and skilled talents.

Tsehaye Berecha Yedesa (特沙莱·贝雷查·亚德萨), State Minister of the Ministry of Labor and Skills of Ethiopia,delivered a speech via video. He mentioned that in recent years, the comprehensive cooperative partnership between Ethiopia and China has rapidly developed and yielded fruitful results, especially in the fields of education and culture. He also stated that today’s assembly is also the extension of the exchanges between Ethiopia and China, and the “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program” will cultivate high-quality skilled talents for the Ethiopian labor market, significantly enhance the employability of Ethiopian graduates, and contribute to the development of the technical and vocational education and training in Ethiopia.

Then Tefera Derbew Yimam, Ambassador of Ethiopia in China,delivered a speech, statingthat this program will strengthen cooperation between Ethiopia and Henan Province in the areas of human resource skills development and talent cultivation,andthatenhancing communication and exchanges between universities and institutions in both countries is particularly crucial for the construction and development of human resource capacity,sothe launch of the “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program” will effectively improve existing cooperation mechanisms and will certainly make significant contributions to the development of human resources in Ethiopia.

Wang Huaxing, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Education Department Henan Province expressed in his speech that Henan’s higher vocational universities, represented by YRCTI, have consistently pursued high-quality development and continuously improved their international education levels, and that collaborating with Ethiopian vocational universities on the “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program” this time is a significant milestone in the international cooperation of Henan’s vocational universities, which not only serves as an effective attempt of Henan’s vocational education to stimulate new driving forces of international cooperation, shape a new image for international exchanges, and forge a new brand in international Chinese education but also represents an important action of Henan’s vocational education to actively participate in China-foreign people-to-people exchanges and serve the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

After this, Ambassador Tefera Derbew Yimam, on behalf of the Ministry of Labor and Skills of Ethiopia, presented the “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program” Certificates of Approval to YRCTI, Henan Polytechnic, and Henan Vocational College of Agriculture.

During the special presentation stage following the launching ceremony, YRCTI’s President Hu Hao, Mei Letang, President of Henan Polytechnic, Liu Yuan, President of Henan Vocational College of Agriculture, Wu Yong, Managing Director of Henan Link Africa Business Information Consulting Co., Ltd., respectively delivered special presentations around the cultivation of international water conservancy and agricultural talents, the development of various cooperative training and skill training, the creation of a Chinese-characterized vocational education brand, and how to support “Chinese + Vocational Skills Program”.

Finally, accompanied by YRCTI’s Party Secretary Zhou Baoping and other leaders, Ambassador Tefera Derbew Yimam, Wang Huaxing, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Education Department Henan Province, Guo Hua, Deputy Director of the Asia and Africa Affairs Office of the Henan Foreign Affairs, and other guests visited the School of Surveying and Mapping Engineering and the “Footprint” cultural landscape, and gained a detailed understanding of YRCTI’s development history and future plans.

During the visit, African international students had a cordial exchange with Ambassador Tefera Derbew Yimam, who inquired in detail about their studies and living conditions and encouraged them to diligently study Chinese language and professional skills and actively spread Chinese culture.

After the launch of this program, the three universities will work together with Ethiopian universities to carry out the “Chinese + Vocational Skills” activities including course construction, talent cultivation, and technical services, to deepen China-Ethiopia vocational education cooperation, support the career development of young people in African countries, and make positive contributions to promoting the exchange and mutual learning among diverse world civilizations and advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
