On December 6, local time in Ethiopia, YRCTI’s Ethiopia Dayu School was inaugurated in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Dr. Damtew Darza, President of Arba Minch University, and Zhou Baoping, Party Committee Secretary of YRCTI, jointly unveiled the nameplate for the Ethiopia Dayu School. Faculty representatives and heads of relevant departments of both universities attended the ceremony.

Zhou Baoping noted that the friendship between China and Ethiopia has a long history, and in October 2023, China and Ethiopia issued a joint statement, declaring to upgrade the existing partnership to an All-Weather Strategic Partnership, which means that both countries will strengthen cooperation and exchanges in fields such as culture, education, science and technology, think tanks, and human resource development and further advance the “Plan for China-Africa Cooperation on Talent Development.” She explained that this statement provides extensive opportunities for educational cooperation between China and Ethiopia and offers significant guidance for comprehensive, broad, and multi-layered international exchanges and cooperation between higher education institutions in both countries. She stated that with a long history and strong educational capabilities, YRCTI is a leader in reform and development among China’s water conservancy vocational universities and one of the earliest vocational universities in China to explore and practice international education and achieve notable results. She also noted that Arba Minch University is a university with distinct characteristics of water conservancy, and both universities share many commonalities in terms of educational histories and major offerings, which presents broad prospects for cooperation in the field of water conservancy education. She stated that the Ethiopia Dayu School co-established by the two universities is another vivid example of implementing the vision outlined in the China-Ethiopia Joint Statement and advancing the internationalization of Chinese vocational education. She further expressed hope that through the establishment of the Ethiopia Dayu School, both universities will deepen cooperation in teaching and research, further strengthen the China-Ethiopia vocational education cooperation, jointly create a leading highland for innovation and development in the water conservancy sector, to foster talents for China-Ethiopia international cooperation, jointly build a closer China-Africa community with a shared future, and contribute to the development of the water conservancy not only in China and Ethiopia but also in the whole world.

Dr. Damtew Darza warmly welcomed Zhou Baoping and her delegation and provided an overview of Arba Minch University’s basic educational situation. He expressed that both universities have significant potential for cooperation in talent cultivation, academic exchange, and research collaboration, and reflecting on the journey of cooperation between the two universities, the establishment of the Dayu School in Ethiopia is a result of deep cooperation in vocational education between China and Ethiopia, which will, by introducing high-quality vocational educational resources from China, accelerate the cultivation of local technical and skilled talents in Ethiopia and provide Ethiopian youth with a new pathway to the international stage.

After this, the leaders of both universities jointly unveiled the nameplate for the Ethiopia Dayu School and held productive discussions on its future development, reaching a consensus on talent cultivation, faculty and student exchanges, research collaboration, and cultural exchange.

In recent years, YRCTI has actively served the construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative by establishing four overseas Dayu Schools in Zambia, South Africa, Thailand, and Ethiopia, to build an overseas brand featuring complete systems and mechanisms, prominent advantages in water conservancy, deep integration of industry and education, and high recognition from the “Belt and Road” countries, share China’s high-level vocational education standards in water conservancy with the world, cultivating a large number of technical and skilled talents urgently needed by China-invested overseas enterprises and the “Belt and Road” countries, paving a new distinctive path for the international development of vocational education, and contributing YRCTI’s wisdom of vocational education to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
